Contrary to popular belief, your vehicle’s efficiency can ebb and flow depending on the health of the components under the hood. If you’ve been experiencing lackluster efficiency, repairing or replacing one of these three parts may help get your vehicle back on track.

Spark Plugs

One of the first things that drivers should check if they notice their fuel expenses are rising are the vehicle’s spark plugs. Spark plugs play the important role of igniting the fuel within your engine’s cylinders, meaning malfunctions can cost drivers a pretty penny on wasted fuel. Spark plugs typically require replacement around every 80,000 miles, so if it’s been a while since your last replacement, they could be the culprit.

Airflow Sensor

A more insidious issue that may be the cause of your vehicle’s overconsumption could be miscalibrated or malfunctioning airflow sensors. Fuel requires a certain amount of oxygen to be ignited in your engine’s cylinders, which is regulated by an airflow sensor.

Too little oxygen can prevent the fuel from combusting, resulting in your vehicle’s fuel efficiency going haywire.

Cabin Air Filter

This one may not seem like it would play a role in fuel consumption, but it absolutely does if you utilize your vehicle’s HVAC system. Cabin air filters prevent dust and debris from being blown directly at drivers and passengers, meaning they can accumulate much detritus over time.

When this happens, the HVAC system has to work harder to operate at the same level drivers are accustomed to, thus causing more fuel to be consumed in the process.
